I don't know why everybody is so hot on a letter grade per every calendar day, or even points per calendar day, if you have a lot of assignments who the heck wants to keep up with that?
I accept late assignments till the last day of the term. Once they're late, they're late, and lose 5 points per every 25 the assignment is worth period. This doesn't seem to take up any of my time extra (mainly cause I'm still very very up to date with my grading, to the point where I hand back assignments same day while students work on projects and tests) and it makes me seem nice. Plus you know? 90% of them never turn in anything once it's late. I suppose if people started abusing the policy....
